What is the Muslim men’s dress code?

Essentially, the guiding principle for Islamic dress code is to guard one’s modesty. Both men and women are charged to wear loose clothing and reserve their sexuality only for spouses. The basics of these teachings on modest dress for Muslims can be found in two ayah of the Qur’an: “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And God is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards God, that ye may attain Bliss.” – Qur’an 24:30-31

In the ayat above, one can see that Muslim men are ordered to have modest dress first and then Muslim women are ordered to dress modestly. The wisdom behind this has often been referenced that since Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, that men must be first in faith and lead the women of their family in righteous behavior. This attitude is reflected in the Hadith regarding hijab wherein the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said, (as narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar) “Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects. A man is the guardian of his family and he is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and his children and she is responsible for them. The servant of a man is a guardian of the property of his master and he is responsible for it. Surely, every one of you is a shepherd and responsible for his flock.”- Sahih Bukhari 6719, Sahih Muslim 1829 graded Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Therefore, a clothing for Muslim men must be modest, private areas should be concealed with loose fabric and the attitude of dress must always be with honor and dignity. This is why traditional dress from India, Pakistan and Arabic countries has remained popular with Muslims in America. Middle Eastern Muslim Clothing is not just a dress for Arabs, it can be for everyone!
