Why should Muslim men and women use body oils? It’s sunnah to use attar!
Imam Al-Nawawi recorded “If a man takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself thoroughly, uses oil and perfume (attar) which is available in the house, sets forth for the Masjid, does not (forcibly) sit between two persons, offers the prayer that is prescribed for him and listens to the Imaam silently, his sins between this Friday and the previous Friday will be forgiven.” [Riyad-us- Saliheen / V1/ H828 / Hadeeth Sahih]
The best kind of attar perfume oil is musk oil. Imaam an-Nasa’i recorded a hadeeth by Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “A women from among the Children of Israel took a ring of gold and filled it with musk.’ The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said: ‘That is the best kind of Taib (attar, perfume oil, oil fragrances, musk oils)’” [Sunan an-Nasa’i / V6 / H5122 / Hadeeth Sahih]
Attar scented oils are a wonderful thing for both men and women to wear. The sunnah of using perfume oils extends to both, the only exception is that women are strongly advised not to wear any strong scent which could be attractive to a man casually passing by her. The musk oil for women should be very delicate and light in scent as should any other attar perfume oil she chooses to wear. Men’s attar body oil can be strong, but should not be offensive in strength.
